Text
This is an edited version of the surviving portions of the daily journal of Robert SPENCE of Lundy's Lane. Mr. SPENCE appears to have been a remarkable man: taking a keen interest in his community, his family and his farm. The journal covers certain periods between July 1866 and May 1872. The reader will become quickly aware of the active Iifestyle led by our forebears.
Robert SPENCE(1843-1915) Iived on Lot 142 Stamford Township, evidently running the farm for his father at the time of the journal's entries. His wife was Margaret LAW (1854-1933). His father, Henry, a native of England, who was a building contractor/farmer, settled in Stamford in 1834. According to the 1876 Page's Atlas he owned Lot 142 in Drummondville subdivision and Lots 172,161,158, 147, having his home on Lot 161. Much of this land had frontage on Lundy's Lane, east of Dorchester Road and southward to MacLeod Road. Henry was a prominent man in Drummondville. Henry SPENCE married three times. His first wife was Mary SHIPTON who died 23 August 1837 aged 28 years. He married secondly Elizabeth BARKER who died 19 October 1840 aged 20 years. On 10 November 1842 he was married by Rev. Lewis WARNER to Sarah PEW of Stamford- Sarah PEW was the daughter of Robert PEW and Margaret WILLSON and granddaughter of Samuel PEW and Thomas WILLSON, United Empire Loyalists from New Jersey- Sarah died in 1895, aged 75 years. Henry SPENCE died in 1894 in his 84th year. A monument to Henry SPENCE and his wives is located in Drummond Hill Cemetery'Niagara Falls.
Other children of Henry SPENCE included:
This information concerning the SPENCE family is a compilation of the data provided to the editor with the journal. The data is from a copy of the original notes of the late Mr. Ernest Green by Mrs. Stanley Tolan of Niagara Falls, Ontario in July 1948. Mr. Green's notes were made upon reading the Spence Journal from the James C. Morden Collection of Papers. Further data was supplied by research efforts of Mrs. E. Summers. Revisions to the first editions have been made from information contributed by H. Jeanne Thomson, a great granddaughter of Abigail (Spence) Dobbie.
The editor would like to bring to the reader's attention the appendices at the end of the journal. This information cannot all be verified as being the work of the original author. It was felt that these listing should be thus kept separate from the original entries, but may be of value to some readers seeking their ancestors in this area of the Niagara Peninsula. I feel I have captured the journal's spirit. I hope the journal provides the reader with interesting, enjoyable material.
